Why Do We Seek Someone’s Closeness?

A simple-looking question that leads us into happiness, pain, choice, and the environment that shaped our motives.

Why does a friend come closer to you? Why does a spouse or partner want you? Why does one person choose solitude while another remains in a painful relationship? We may answer: love, familiarity, or benefit. Yet those words often describe what we see without fully revealing what moves a person from within.

The idea in one sentence

A person tends to choose what appears to offer more happiness—or less pain—even when that choice is not objectively best for them.

This is where the model begins. We do not ask only whether a relationship exists. We also ask how the person feels, what their dominant orientation is, and what outcome follows. “Best” means best as the person perceives it at the time, not best according to an outside observer.

Before counting: who is “positive” or “negative”?

“Positive” and “negative” are not moral or social verdicts here. Society may label someone negatively while their actual influence is constructive, or the reverse. The distinction is not measured by wealth, fame, or status.

The intended meaning is the dominant direction of a person’s speech, thought, and action: constructive or destructive, hopeful or pessimistic, life-advancing or life-obstructing. No one is entirely positive or entirely negative, so this should be measured on a continuum rather than treated as a fixed box.

How does the model reach 104 possibilities?

The model first separates people into two broad groups: those who feel happy and those who feel unhappy. Within each group, it considers relationship choice, positive or negative orientation, and positive or negative outcome. After separating the non-relationship cases, the model proposes ten possible relational states for each party.

One hundred two-person combinations, plus four independent non-relationship states

The four independent states combine happiness or unhappiness with a positive or negative outcome of solitude. The other one hundred arise by matching Party A’s ten states with Party B’s ten states. This is an initial conceptual matrix; formally defining the ten states and preventing overlap between them is the first task of the proposed empirical study.

What does 1.92% mean?

Within the model, only two states represent the fully healthy picture: a person who is happy alone with a positive outcome, or two positive, happy people whose relationship has a positive outcome. If—only for calculation—we assume all 104 possibilities are equally likely, the proportion becomes:

A theoretical equal-probability baseline, not a measured population prevalence

Important: The number does not claim that only 1.92% of real relationships are healthy. It answers a conditional mathematical question: what follows if every state is equally likely? The small result is unsurprising because the model’s healthy state requires several conditions at once. Real prevalence can only be estimated from data.

Why do some relationships appear illogical?

We may see a positive person with a negative partner, or someone remaining in a harmful relationship, and ask why. The model suggests that the relationship provides something the person values more than its cost, or relieves a pain they perceive as worse than the relationship itself. Apparent happiness may therefore be temporary relief from internal pressure rather than proof of relational health.

The model’s author calls these pressures “illnesses” in a conceptual—not clinical—sense. For precision, they can be understood as compensatory gaps or motives in three domains:

🛡️

Fear

A person may accept a negative relationship because it softens loneliness or creates a sense of safety.

🏅

Seeking recognition

Someone may harm others to gain status, or exhaust themselves by helping so that they can feel valuable.

❤️

Sexual motive

Immediate sexual gratification may outweigh judgments about compatibility and long-term outcome.

From this perspective, an apparently strange relationship is not without logic. Its logic may be hidden in the pain it relieves. If fear recedes, self-worth stabilizes, or the sexual motive changes, the relationship itself may change because its former function is no longer needed.

Environment is not a silent background

The model’s final hypothesis is that environment produces a substantial part of these gaps. A fearful, oppressive, or exploitative environment may teach people to seek safety and recognition at any price. An exploiting person may pair with someone who gives without boundaries; both seek recognition differently, and each completes the other’s pattern until one of them changes.

This leads to a testable question: are negative compensatory relationships more common in stressful environments, while chosen solitude and positive relationships become more common in safer, freer environments? Reflection can propose the question, but only comparison and data can answer it.

So, where are you?

Before asking, “Why does this person want me?” also ask: what does my presence relieve in them, and what does theirs relieve in me? Are we happier and growing together, or merely soothing each other’s pain? Is the outcome genuinely positive, or does immediate relief hide a later cost?

The model is not a final judgment on people. It is an initial map that asks us to observe motive, outcome, and environment together. Its real value will emerge when it moves from a debatable idea to measurable hypotheses.
